The LA Homeless Services Authority reports that homeless individuals in Los Angeles County are more likely to be either Black or Latino.
As of January 2020, there has been a 19% increase in youth experiencing homelessness since last year.
 
In short, homelessness is a growing public health crisis and policy failure that disproportionately affects underserved youth of color.
 
Students in transient housing such as foster homes, motels, or shelters are more likely to drop out of school and are 4.5 times more likely to experience homelessness later in life.
 
The door of opportunity closes on them before they even turn 18.

On the macro level, investment in the education of underserved individuals– particularly those in Black, Indigenous, and Latinx communities– mitigates the effects of structural racism and breaks these individuals out of the cycle of poverty.
